I am deeply saddened by this news, please accept my condolences to the family. My apologies for being so late, I knew Ben since many years from being a collector friend of spinning reels.
I have learned so much from him, I can never express what he has meant to me. I was fortunate to have been able to contribute a small part to some of his great books. Kind regards, Jean-Paul Ceulemans from Belgium

What is knowing a person ... what is not knowing a person?
Either way, I somehow felt I knew Ben - even if I didn't - really. But that's how straight forward he was, and that's how I will always remember him. Ben was a very down to earth kinda person, with a very un-complicated personality, that made you feel good inside - as well as familiar with him - just chatting with him.
As I am Danish, hence living in Denmark, Scandinavia, Ben and I unfortunately never met face to face. All we did were correcpond through emails from around 1997 onwards. Mostly during his 2002 update to his well known "The Wright Price Guide for the Reel Man". But we kept in touch over the years almost to the very end.
Now, Ben is no more, and I am really sad he is gone! I am, however, satisfied in knowing, that where Ben's at now, he will always be looking at the nicest spinning reels known to man :-)
My thoughts & prayers goes to Ben's closest family.
Thanks, Ben!
Bo Nielsen / Denmark

Shari,
I am saddened at the loss of your husband. Ben was a good friend, and we will miss his slightly crooked smile and the twinkle in his eye when he talked about his reel collection. I enjoyed the time spent working with him on his book. I hope you find peace in knowing he no longer struggles to breathe. And in knowing that his happiest thoughts were of you, your daughters and grandchildren. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family, Craig and Amy Barnes

I was so saddened by the notice that Ben had passed away.
I had corresponded with Ben for the past 2-3 years and purchased many fishing reels from him. I was notified by a friend in Italy (that I have been purchasing vintage fishing reels from), of Ben's passing. This should show the family that "Ben's reach" was global and he was a legend in the fishing reel community. I plan on sending this notice to others that Ben knew in France, Sweden and others in Italy.
I had only know Ben for a short while. I would occasionally have a question about a particular reel and he was so gracious in his answers back to me. A true gentleman, helping a novice out in their hobbies.
I wish to express my condolences to the Wright family for your loss. I want you to understand that though Ben is gone, Ben's legacy is intact and will continue to grow because of his books. He helped countless individuals...like myself, to understand the antique fishing reel hobby and made it much easier to understand.
It was an honor to know him.
Rest in Peace Ben, rest in peace.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I became acquainted with Ben quite a few years back as a result of Ben’s books and our mutual interest in spin reel collecting. Ben is single-handedly responsible for expanding my interest in, and knowledge of, spinning reels from only that of ABU/Zeco Cardinals on into and throughout the entire gamut of makes and models. We soon became very good and everlasting friends. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him on multiple research projects for several ORCA Reel News articles. Ben repeatedly tried to convince me to write and submit articles for the Reel News magazine, and I continually told him that everything I knew I had learned from him. I will deeply miss our camaraderie and, at times, our near daily communications.

When our family moved to LeRoy in the summer of 1962, Ben worked at our home and played basketball in our barn. It was a great year. That team was magical and Ben was an important part of that famous group. He will be missed.

Ben was a friend to me and hundreds of other collectors worldwide. He was generous in spirit and in passing on his knowledge. I never knew him to ignore any question asked of him. He will be greatly missed, but he will live in on his writings.
I will miss you, Ben.
